Factory-Trained on the VRF Systems We Service

Most VRF problems we’re called to fix trace back to installation and commissioning. Before founding Four Roots, David Quezada spent nearly five years at ACCO Engineered Systems starting up and commissioning VRF heat recovery systems for multiple manufacturers. He holds manufacturer installation training on:

  • Mitsubishi Electric City Multi VRF (2020)
  • LG Multi V Heat Recovery (2020)
  • Fujitsu Airstage VRF (2015) and J-Series Installer Qualification (2021)
  • Samsung DVM S (2017)
  • Carrier Toshiba VRF and Carrier Midea VRF (2019)

That commissioning background is why we can find what others miss: piping and branch controller errors, bad address and group configuration, and refrigerant charge problems that show up as chronic comfort complaints and nuisance faults.

Problems We’ve Fixed

Most of our VRF work starts after someone else’s install or repair hasn’t held up. A few recent examples:

Samsung DVM S, 18 fancoils, Sacramento

The owner had constant communication errors and comfort complaints that never went away. We traced the refrigerant piping and found fancoils and communication wiring landed on the wrong branch selector ports: the controls thought one zone was being served when the refrigerant was going somewhere else. Over 32 hours we corrected the connections on all 18 fancoils and fully recommissioned the system. The customer finally got the system they thought they had paid for.

Repeated refrigerant leaks, 12 fancoils, Oroville

This system kept losing charge. Instead of adding refrigerant and hoping, we installed isolation valves so we could pressure test sections of the system one at a time. That pinpointed two leaking evaporator coils. We replaced both coils and recommissioned the system.

Two years later, during a routine maintenance visit, we noticed early signs that the system was running low on refrigerant again. With the isolation valves already in place, we located and isolated the newly failed fancoil before the system lost its charge. The owner kept the rest of the system running and replaced the coil when it fit their budget and schedule.

VRF Service Questions

Why does my VRF system keep showing communication errors?

Most recurring VRF communication errors trace back to the installation:

  • The wrong type of communication wire
  • Communication wire run parallel to high-voltage lines, which causes interference
  • Poor terminations, like over-stripped wire that lets bare copper touch
  • Shield wire that isn’t installed or grounded correctly

Wiring landed on the wrong branch selector port or incorrect addressing can cause it too. Resetting the system clears the code but not the cause. The fix is inspecting and correcting the wiring, then recommissioning.

Why does my VRF system keep leaking refrigerant?

VRF systems have long piping runs and many joints and coils, so a leak can be anywhere. We install isolation valves and pressure test the system in sections to find the actual leak, then repair it and recommission, rather than recharging a system that will leak again. The valves stay in place, so future problems can be isolated without losing the whole charge.

Can you fix a VRF system another contractor installed?

Yes. Much of our VRF work is correcting systems that other contractors installed or couldn’t fix. David Quezada spent nearly five years commissioning VRF heat recovery systems and is factory-trained on Samsung, Mitsubishi, LG, Fujitsu, Toshiba and Midea platforms.

What does VRF service cost?

Service is billed at $175 per hour during regular hours (Monday to Friday, 7 am to 5 pm) or $350 per hour after hours, with a 1-hour minimum, plus a $150 truck charge per visit. Diagnostic time is billed at the same rate as part of the repair bill. Larger corrections and recommissioning are quoted in writing after we diagnose the system.

Specialized Maintenance for Care Facilities and Hospitality

In care facilities and hospitality environments, HVAC system reliability directly impacts occupant health, safety, and satisfaction. A system failure can lead to significant disruptions and discomfort. Four Roots Air Solutions builds maintenance for these buildings around catching problems before they turn into outages.

Care Facilities

For assisted living centers, nursing homes, and medical facilities, precise temperature and humidity control are vital for patient well-being. Our maintenance programs keep VRF systems holding steady temperatures and keep filters and coils clean. How much fresh air and filtration a building gets depends on its ventilation design, which we can evaluate as a separate scope.

Hospitality Industry

Hotels, resorts, and restaurants rely on superior climate control to guarantee guest satisfaction. A malfunctioning HVAC system can result in negative reviews and lost revenue. Our tailored service plans ensure your VRF heat recovery systems provide individualized comfort in every room, operating quietly and efficiently to enhance the guest experience.

The Benefits of Proactive VRF Maintenance

Maximized Uptime

Regular inspections catch many problems before they cause a breakdown, which reduces unplanned downtime for occupants and staff.

Enhanced Energy Efficiency

Clean coils and properly charged systems consume less energy, lowering utility costs and supporting your facility’s sustainability goals.

Extended Equipment Lifespan

Proactive care reduces wear and tear, delaying the need for costly system replacements and maximizing the return on your VRF investment.

Improved Indoor Air Quality

Routine filter changes and coil cleaning keep indoor units from recirculating built-up dust and debris. For care facilities and hotels, we can also review ventilation and filtration as a separate scope.

Protected Warranty

Documented maintenance helps you meet the maintenance conditions many manufacturer warranties include. Check your specific warranty terms.
